As the Snow Sports Product Manager at The North Face, I was responsible for the strategic business and line plan development of a $2 million ski resort uniform program. At that time we supplied comprehensive custom uniforms to Squaw Valley Resort and Snow Bird Resort, as well as, twenty-five other smaller resorts all over the world.
Whistler Blackcomb Resort is a world-renowned year-round destination resort. Offering endless activities and reliably deep snow on legendary terrain, and a vibrant resort village. We approached Whistler about the opportunity to build a custom uniform program for all resort employees. This included, but was not limited to the uniforms for the snowboard school instructors, ski lift operators, food beverage servers, and ski Patrollers.
We brought a team of designers, product developers, and athletes to shadow the ski school instructors on and off the mountain to understand their uniform needs and identify opportunities to provide the best uniforms that would improve their experience and help students learn better. We also conducted a color theory study, physical movement research and textile design and development.
Color Theory: We chose colors that stood out on the mountain, and were easy for students to identify. The color theme was inspired by the local Indian culture of British Columbia.
Physical Movement Research: We targeted key body movements that are common in ski instruction and designed jackets that are built to move with the body with ease.
Textile Development: Created proprietary performance textiles with Gore-tex, which including knife proof fabric used by the US military on the kick patches to avoid ripping when skis are rubbed against them.
In 2015 we launched a comprehensive 5-year uniform partnership with world-renowned Whistler Blackcomb Resort for this was an industry first, most contracts are only three years and only incorporate part of the resort's uniforms. This resulted in receiving two prominent awards the Nuptse Award for creativity and innovation from The North Face and Best Employee Engagement award from Whistler Blackcomb Resort.
